Sustainable Monash

Our purpose: We take pride in keeping Monash clean and tidy, maximising our resource recovery, and supporting the community and Council to adapt to a changing climate through sustainable practices and education.

The Sustainable Monash Department provides a range of community services which support our community in providing a sustainable, healthy and clean municipality. Sustainable Monash covers essential services and projects, including:

Waste Management

Recycling and Waste Centre - A facility for the community to bring in end of life items for recycling or landfill.
Waste administration and customer service
Contract management and administration.
Strategic planning for the achievement of effective waste diversion and recycling targets.
Efficient kerbside residential and commercial collection of waste, recyclables, food and greens.
Effective annual and at call hard rubbish collection and Litter prevention education and dumped rubbish collection; Street and Activity Centre cleaning and sweeping.
Coordination of full waste lifecycle.
Closed landfill management; and Waste planning support to Town Planning

Sustainability

Activating the community and businesses through education and support on environmental sustainability;
Climate Change preparedness to improve community and infrastructure resilience;
Delivery of the Zero Net Carbon Action Plan 2025 to mitigate climate change impacts;
Embedding sustainability into Council processes and procurement through promotion of the Environmental Sustainable Design Policy and cross team engagement;
Promoting importance of urban biodiversity and improved vegetation through Green Shoots and Gardens for Wildlife programs;
Promotion and education of the Food and Garden waste collection service to reduce contamination and improve recovery.
Guiding Council and community towards a Circular Economy future;
Energy Efficiency and Water Sensitive Urban Design programs; and
Advocacy to government on climate action, sustainability and waste policy.
