Postal voting for October 2020 Council election

The next Council elections will be held on Saturday, 24 October. Council elections are conducted by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) as required under the Local Government Act 1989.

Since 1997, Monash Council has used the postal method of voting, rather than attendance voting,  as it is considered the most efficient and accessible method of voting for the community.

At the 29 October 2019 Council meeting, Council determined that it would continue to use postal voting in the 2020 Council elections.

Voter participation in Monash elections has been consistently high, at average 74%, since 1997 with a partipation rate of 77.6% in the 2016 election.

Postal voting is Council's preferred option because the election comes to the voter via the ballot pack. Voters have a two week window to complete their ballot paper and return it. 

This method of voting allows equal access to the voting process for those who have mobiity issues, do not have access to private transport or easy access to public transport and non-resident voters.

Voters can also apply for pre-poll voting.
