Tips to ensure accepted items are collected
Uncollected items
Monash residents get one free annual hard waste collection and can book an extra hard waste collection for a fee.
The following information relates to both types of collection.
- Only put accepted items on your nature strip 2 days before your collection.
- For the annual hard waste collection, there is a limit of 4m3. This is equal to 1m wide x 2m long x 2m high.
- For the extra hard waste service, there is a limit of 2m3.
All items must be less than 1.5m in length and able to be safely lifted by 2 people.
Yes, these items can be put out for collection
Check below for the list of what can be placed on the nature strip for collection. Most items are collected for recycling or resource recovery, but some items are sent to landfill.
Please group items in 5 stacks and follow the instructions provided.
Items may be collected by different trucks at different times.
Stack 1: Hard waste
- Toys
- Carpet or linoleum (no more than 2 rolls, must be rolled and tied)
- Window glass, mirrors, ceramics (securely wrapped and marked as “glass” or “ceramics”)
- Hard household furniture (tables, chairs, etc.)
- Timber (no longer than 1.5m, no more than 12 pieces).
Stack 2: Metals
- Washing machines
- Microwaves
- Irons
- Pots, pans
- Lawn mowers (remove oil/fuel)
- Hot water units
- Scrap metal.
Stack 3: Mattresses and soft furniture
- Mattresses (no more than 2)
- Bed base
- Soft furniture.
Stack 4: Fridges and electronic items
- Fridges (remove doors)
- Computers and printers
- Televisions
- Electrical goods (items with a plug or cord. Remove all batteries).
Stack 5: Garden waste
- Small logs (must be tied with natural twine)
- Small tree stumps
- Garden branches (must be tied with natural twine).
All items must be less than 1.5m in length and able to be safely lifted by 2 people.
No, these items can't be put out for collection
- Any item longer than 1.5m and/or too heavy for 2 people to lift
- Batteries (any type)
- Bean bags
- Bricks, concrete, stone, clay, fencing, sand, soil or rubble
- Cabinetry, cupboard and bench materials
- Cardboard and recylables (bottles, paper, plastic)
- Carpet or underlay (more than 2 rolls)
- Cement sheeting, fibreboard (MDF), plaster
- Coil springs
- Construction, renovation or demolition waste
- Gas bottles
- Glass (unwrapped or broken)
- Hazardous waste (asbestos, paint, pesticides, chemicals etc.)
- Household rubbish
- Large car parts (any type)
- Oil
- Polystyrene
- Porcelain (including toilet, bath, shower base)
- Synthetic (fake) grass
- Timber longer than 1.5m and/or more than 12 pieces
- Water tanks (whole or dismantled)
- Wooden pallets.

Tips to ensure accepted items are collected
You can make sure your hard waste can be easily collected by:
- Only putting accepted items out for collection.
- Separating your items into the 5 stacks above: (1) hard waste, (2) metals, (3) mattresses and soft furniture, (4) fridges and electronic items, and (5) garden waste.
- Putting accepted items on your nature strip before 6am on the Monday of your collection week.
- Ensuring no vehicles are parked in front of your waste.
Items may be collected by different trucks, at different times, during your collection week.
Uncollected items
Items that aren’t accepted will be left behind.
You will receive a note in your letterbox to let you know why the items couldn’t be collected, and how you can correctly dispose of them.
Please remove uncollected items from the nature strip within 24 hours of receiving the notice.
