Trichotomy/Louisa Rankin: Live at The Count's
One of the most exciting trios in contemporary music. - All About Jazz Vivaciously balances thematic eloquence with tight-knit polyphonic sophistication. - The Guardian This is a genuine trio, with three equally important parts, and they never put a foot or finger wrong. - BBC Music Magazine Brisbane piano trio Trichotomy really needs no introduction.
With a 20-year history of music making together the group have performed around the world touring to Japan, China, UK, Europe, Canada, and South America, performing at festivals and jazz clubs, and collaborating with dance companies, jazz, classical and pop artists, showcasing their versatility and captivating sound. Inspired by a diverse range of influences from Portico Quartet, Pat Metheny and John Zorn to Esbjorn Svensson, Tord Gustavsen, and Nils Petter Molvear, Trichotomy’s music combines a dense rhythmic focus with a refined melodic clarity.
There is a genuine sense of a rich three-way interplay within the music, with intricate composed elements flowing into free flowing improvisations. It’s dynamic stuff, grabbing the listener right from the start. After a string of collaborative tracks with classical percussionist Nozomi Omote, Trichotomy released a new album To Vanish. The album showcases the bands’ ability to synthesise a spectrum of concepts, extending the world first sound created on the Known/Unknown album where electronic and acoustic sounds interact, connecting with Trichotomy’s signature melodic inventiveness.
After touring the UK and Europe in March, they now bring their captivating sound to The Counts in support of their album release. Supporting act Louisa Rankin is a dynamic and compelling vocalist whose vocal artistry has been developed and refined over years of continued musical exploration. An emerging composer on the Australian jazz landscape Rankin’s music will excite, challenge and delight listeners as she creates a unique sound-world to express both wistful musings and profound contemplations.
