Monash Academy Orchestra: Force Majeure
The Monash Academy Orchestra opens its 2024 season in the Alexander Theatre, joined by conductor Roger Benedict and acclaimed Australian pianist Lisa Moore.
Prokofiev composed his exuberant and playful Symphony No.1 in 1917. It looks back at the style and humour of Haydn; Prokofiev himself bestowed the nickname ‘Classical’ upon the work. To this day it has remained one of his most popular works.
At the heart of the program is Elena Kats-Chernin’s Force Majeure, a work for solo piano and large ensemble in four movements, written especially for Lisa Moore.
The concert concludes with the Symphony No.95 of Haydn, a work that demonstrates his rhythmic brilliance and contrapuntal skill, along with his characteristic liveliness and wit. One of his 12 London Symphonies, it is the only one in a minor key.
