Based in Melbourne Australia, having relocated from NYC after seven years in the USA, pianist/composer Mina Yu has built a reputation as a top-tier pianist and educator. Whilst based in the USA, Mina performed as a pianist, accompanist and music director in a number of New York City’s most prestigious concert venues, including Carnegie Hall, Columbia University and New York Live Arts. She has also undertaken international tours of South Korea, Australia, England and Switzerland.
In addition to her work as a pianist, Mina is also an accomplished composer and arranger. Since establishing herself in Melbourne, she has performed at the Melbourne Recital Centre, Hamer Hall, the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, the Melbourne International Women’s Jazz Festival, St Paul’s Cathedral, Parliament House, NGV, The Arts Centre, ACMI, 170 Russell, the Jazzlab, the Paris Cat Jazz Club and Melbourne University. She also served as the musical director/pianist for the Melbourne concert of renowned K-pop star, Tae Woo Kim (G.O.D).
Mina currently teaches piano at Melbourne University (VCA) and Monash College. Her qualifications include a Bachelor of Music from Berklee College of Music and a Master of Jazz Performance from Manhattan School of Music. Whilst at Manhattan School of Music, she was the recipient of many awards, including the CJ Culture Scholarship and the MSM Scholarship.
During the last three years, Mina has appeared on a number of projects. These include albums by ZEDSIX, The Shape of Jazz (Bell Award winner), and Richard Pavlidis’ Without Within (reviewed by The Australian newspaper). She has also collaborated with artists including Fem Belling, Women of Soul, Jonathan Skovron, Uncomfortable Science (featuring Laneous), Nardia Brancatisano and Morgana.
