Kumar Shome & the Punkawallahs are a fiery Psych-Jazz-Funk group known for their intricate and energetic stylings. Led by frontman Kumar Shome (Sampa the Great, Cat Empire, the Bamboos, Ajak Kwai) the all-instrumental band features some of Melbourne’s best musical technicians building hypnotic polyrhythmic layers on three guitars, bass and drums.

The band’s new album, Kanya, is due for release in July. Kanya tells Shome’s personal story, with songs celebrating his Indian culture, his experiences growing up in Australia and his journey through the Melbourne music scene.

The album features a heady mix of soulful, contemplative songs and electrifying dance tunes. Kumar Shome & the Punkawallahs’ sound is reminiscent of artists such as Thundercat and Khruangbin – not to be missed by jazz, funk and guitar fans!
