I Am Water - Silent Film Screening

I Am Water is a silent film that speaks of first-generation Australian women and their connection to water. The film was created following a workshop between artist Sofie Dieu and fifty migrant women living in the suburbs of Melbourne, namely the City of Monash. Capturing personal narratives and the yearning for home through textiles and needlework, a three-meter diameter dress was created featuring sixty individual embroideries. 

The dress was performed by Dieu in the Victorian Alps of Australia and was recorded in digital and analogue photography and video. Later edits in the artist's studio in Brunswick, Beleke-bek, came to create I Am Water.  

I Am Water aims to positively represent the creative work of women from migrant and refugee backgrounds.
