2024 FAS Awards: a new art award for local artists!

2024 FAS Awards

We have partnered with Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre to launch the inaugural 2024 For Arts' Sake (FAS) Awards.

The FAS Awards are open to artists of all career levels and are open to wall-based mediums, including painting, drawing, photography, textiles, printmaking, and wall sculpture that measure no more than 30cm x 30cm.

The FAS Awards celebrate visual artists and help champion the creative industries, providing a prize pool worth over $6,000 (funded by Waverley Gardens).

Monash will award an in-kind solo exhibition opportunity at Monash Civic Gallery.

2024 FAS Awards Presentation Day

The 2024 For Arts’ Sake (FAS) Awards presentation was held on Monday 28 October, from 10am at the Monash Civic Centre to celebrate the winners of this amazing new art award dedicated to local artists.

Artwork requirements

Artworks must be a wall-based medium such as painting, drawing, photography, textiles, printmaking, collage, and wall sculpture no more than 30cm x 30cm.

Labelling of artwork

Artwork must be labelled with the following information on the back of the artwork itself for identification:

  • Name
  • Artwork title
  • Medium

Hanging artworks 

Artworks must be ready to hang upon drop-off. Canvases may be hung off their stretcher frames, and all framed and unframed works must have wire or hooks attached. 

Artworks with unsuitable hanging systems, including string, double-sided tape, or no hanging mechanism at all will not be accepted at drop off. 

What is accepted

  • Unframed artworks that measure below 30cm on all sides.
  • Framed artworks that measure below 30cm on all sides.
  • Rounded artworks that measure below 30cm in diameter.
  • Sculptural works if they measure below 30cm x 30cm (h x w) and are no more than 10cm (d). It must be wall hangable.

What is not accepted

  • Unframed artworks that measure above 30cm on any side.
  • Framed artworks that measure above 30cm on any sides including the frame.
  • Rounded artworks that measure above 30cm in diameter.
  • Paintings that are not wholly dry on the drop off day.

Works using unsuitable materials to hang, such as string, double-sided tape, or no hanging mechanism at all.

Submitting artwork

  • Up to 3 artworks can be entered.
  • Artworks must be registered via the online portal.  
  • Entries must be registered no later than 4pm on Saturday 17 August 2024 (applications and submissions after this date and time will not be accepted).
  • There are no costs associated with 2024 entries of artworks or its exhibitions.
  • The online submission form will request artwork details and a short artist statement.
  • The artist statement will be displayed alongside the artwork in the exhibition.

  • Monash Civic Centre between Monday 12 August – Friday 16 August, 5pm.
  • Glen Waverley Library on Saturday 17 August, 9am – 4pm.
  • Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre from Monday 12 August – Saturday 17 August, 9am – 4pm. 

Please note: Works cannot be accepted outside of these dates and late arrivals will not be exhibited. 

Exhibition viewing

  • Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre from Monday 2 September - Friday 27 September (normal centre trading hours detailed at www.waverleygardens.com.au).
  • Monash Civic Gallery from Friday 4 October 2024 – Friday 1 November 2024 (opening hours Monday - Friday, 8.30am - 5pm).

Artwork collection dates 

  • Monash Civic Centre from Monday 11 November – Wednesday 13 November, 9am - 4pm.
  • Glen Waverley Library on Saturday 16 November, 9am - 4pm.

Please note: Works cannot be collected outside of these dates. Works not collected will be disposed.

Prizes

A prize pool of $6,000 (funded by Waverley Gardens) will be shared across First Prize, Second Prize, 2x Highly Commended Awards, and a People's Choice Award. Monash will award an in-kind solo exhibition opportunity at Monash Civic Gallery worth over $1,000 (please read terms and conditions for prize details).

Prizes are non-acquisitive and as selected by the judging panel.

  • First Prize - $2,000, plus a solo exhibition at the Civic Gallery at an agreed upon date in 2025 worth over $1,000.
  • Second prize - $1,500.
  • Highly Commended - $1,000 to be awarded to 2 recipients.
  • People's Choice Award - $500 (as chosen by popular vote by our local community and visitors to the exhibition at Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre).

Artworks will be assessed on the criteria:

  • Technical skill
  • Artistic merit
  • Clear concept
  • Innovative use of the chosen medium 

The People’s Choice Award will be open to the public via ballot box at Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre between 2 September – 20 September 2024.
