Off-leash areas for dogs

There are off-leash areas for dogs in the City of Monash. Council has made changes to these areas, which came into effect on 1 July 2023.

Controlling your dog

Dog owners have obligations at designated off-leash reserves as per Council's Dog Control Order, including cleaning up after their pet and making sure they can be put on a leash.

Dog poo bag dispensers and drinking fountains

To make it easier for people to pick up after their dogs, there are dog poo bag dispensers in local parks and reserves. There are also fountains with separate drinking areas for people and for dogs.

Barking dogs

Dogs that bark excessively can become a source of irritation for neighbours and others in the area.

Dog attacks, dangerous dogs and restricted breeds

We can declare a dog to be dangerous if it seriously injures a person or animal. Read also about controls associated with the keeping restricted breed dogs.

Cruelty to animals

If you think someone is being cruel to an animal, please phone the RSPCA immediately on 9224 2222.

Anyone found guilty of being cruel to an animal faces fines and possible imprisonment.

Infringement notices

If your animal is deemed to be a nuisance or if you do not apply to register them, you may get an infringement notice. Infringement notices may be issued to the owner of a dog or cat found to be committing an offence prescribed in the Domestic Animals Act or under Council's Community Amenity - Local Law No 3.
