Stay tuned to a battery-powered radio or TV, where possible, to avoid electricity use. Use your phone only for emergency and keep lines clear for essential calls.

A Standard Emergency Warning signal is often used on radio or TV to precede official messages. Listen carefully as the messages will include instructions on what is happening and what you should do. The warning signal does NOT mean to evacuate. Police will try to notify non-English-speaking community members through interpreters and ethnic radio stations, but residents should take some responsibility for looking after neighbours who may be elderly, sick or do not speak English.

Protect pets by ensuring they can be easily moved if evacuation is necessary.

If you are not affected, stay home and leave the roads clear for emergency vehicles.

Council has evacuation centres that can be set up in the municipality in case of an emergency. In an event, you may be instructed to evacuate by a police doorknock, or by radio or TV messages. You will be advised at the time where you should go.

The State Emergency Service (SES) can help residents with damage during a storm event. Council staff work with the SES on clean-up efforts but reporting directly to the SES is the most efficient way to ensure your report is prioritised. For more information, phone 132 500 or go to www.ses.vic.gov.au

You can also report storm damage to roads, footpaths and nature strips to Council on 9518 3555 (during business hours and for after-hours emergencies).

During a storm event, there could be many affected locations across the municipality, and many residents contacting Council. At these times, please be patient while we respond. Council will be clearing roads and paths to make them safe, which could take some time depending on the scale of the storm. We will then return to clear the nature strips as soon as practicable in following weeks. Please try to help Council by keeping any debris clear of roads and paths until it can be removed.
