Monash Men's Shed
The Monash Men’s Shed aims to improve the physical and mental health and wellbeing of its members.
Men often find it difficult to talk about their isolation, mental illness and loneliness. The shed aims to combat this by providing men the opportunity to get involved in the community and to take part in engaging activities, conversation and health programs.
Members of the Shed are able to collaborate with like-minded people, and through their community work, often find a sense of purpose and belonging.
You are welcome to call in for a cuppa and a tour any time during their opening hours, between 9am and 1.30pm, Monday to Saturday.
Workshop Activities
Monash Men's Shed provides a communal space for men to demonstrate their skills, contribute to their community, make new friends and get information on health and other municipal programs. The Shed is accessible to all men with guidance and assistance for inclusion.
Men undertake a range of activities including woodwork, metalwork, lead lighting, painting, model trains, electronics and other activities.
The workshop has equipment that can be used by members who have been through our induction process. These machines include woodworking lathes, planer/thicknessers, drum sanders, bandsaws and much more. Our metalworking room has Mig and Tig welding, milling machinery as well as metal lathes.
Bogong Hall
Separate to the workshop, Bogong Hall provides an ideal venue for quieter pursuits. Activities regularly include card games, art, creative writing, a music group, a tech support group, computer skills, table tennis, darts, snooker and pool.
The gardening group oversees work in the community garden outside and provides food for the community meals held every Wednesday by the cooking group.
Every Wednesday there is a low impact fitness group run by a professional physiotherapist that focuses on balance, flexibility and strength.
Once a month a health professional provides a talk on anything from sleep and fatigue, healthy eating and nutrition, falls prevention to understanding dementia.
Work in the Community
The Men of the shed get involved in the community through the completion of projects for organisations in the area and members of the Monash municipality.
The Shed donations team oversee the quality tools and other items donated to the shed. They organise pickups, collate the items in storage, repair tools that need some work, recycle scrap metal and work with distributing donations to charities in need around the Southeastern suburbs.
All members of the shed come together to prepare for the tool sales held every 3 months, which provide needed funding to the shed’s operation.
Outside the shed
The Members of the Monash Men’s Shed are also given the opportunity for further camaraderie with the dinner group. Members are encouraged to bring their partners or friends out to meet their mates at the Shed.
Men can also come on the bi-monthly bus trips, heading to museums, research facilities and other men’s sheds around Victoria.
The Monash Men’s Shed is a registered Health Promotions Charity with the Australian Charities and Not for Profit Commission.
