Street trees in The Outlook, Glen Waverley

Our focus is on preserving trees that are healthy and creating additional planting in local parks and reserves to boost greenery.

We will only be removing and replacing those trees that are dead, dying (with a useful life expectancy of less than two years) or dangerous (they pose a risk to the community in the short term).

Street Tree Assessments

Our arborists have completed individual tree assessments based on the above criteria and in The Outlook, we are proposing to remove eight trees and will be planting a total of 10 trees which includes an additional three trees in vacant locations.

Replacement Tree Species

Council's arborist has proposed three appropriate tree species to be considered for planting. In some cases, we will need to select two complementary species to be planted on either side of the road to accommodate constraints such as power lines, service pits and other infrastructure that exists within the street.

Survey Results

Council sought feedback (reply paid mail survey and online) on the preferred option of tree species directly affected residents would like to see planted in their street until Friday 21 September 2018.

Your street has selected Option 2 – “Malus tschonoskii Pillar Crabapple” and “Nyssa sylvatica Black Tupelo”.

In The Outlook a total of 19 votes were received. Nine votes for Option 2, and five votes each for Options 1 and 3. 

Council will be responsible for the care of the new street trees for the first two years as they become established. However our residents can play a vital role in their successful establishment by keeping an eye on them and reporting to Council if they see the tree is not looking well or has been damaged.

The trees will then become part of Council’s proactive annual maintenance program, where they will be checked and pruned if necessary as part of an annual program.

Tristaniopsis laurina 'Luscious' - Luscious Kanooka

This native tree has a dense foliage canopy with glossy green leaves that are oblong shaped. Yellow flowers are borne in summer and are abundant with nectar attracting birds. Smooth creamy trunk streaked with grey.

Lophostemon confertus - Queensland Brush Box

This dome-headed tree has a dense, glossy green canopy, great salmon coloured bark that peels in summer. It flowers in summer forming small white clusters.

Malus tschonoskii - Pillar Crabapple

Thistree is one of the most hardy and easily grown trees available. They are a source of bright spring blossom, and feature wonderful autumn tones and highly-colored ornamental fruits. An easy-to-grow, small trees that tolerate a wide variety of growing conditions.

Form: Oval - Pyramidal

Nyssa sylvatica - Black Tupelo

This tree has dark green, glossy leaves which turn yellowish-apricot to bright scarlet in autumn, creating a spectacular autumn display. This tree has good form and is rarely attacked by pests, is very drought tolerant but does benefit from irrigation during dry spells, particularly during establishment.

Lagerstroemia indica x L. fauriei 'Natchez' - Natchez Crepe Myrtle

Thissmall deciduous tree that has white flowers borne in clusters from late summer to early autumns. It has a beautiful growth habit with dark green leaves changing to orange before falling. It has flaking bark with a rich brown under bark.

Ulmus parvifolia 'Todd' - Todd Chinese Elm

This semi deciduous tree has a lovely pendulous habit with bright green serrated leaves. Its bark is smooth and flaky in various shades including grey, rust brown and cream. In autumn its foliage turns various shades of yellow before falling..
