Street trees in Snowden Drive, Glen Waverley

Our focus is on preserving trees that are healthy and creating additional planting in local parks and reserves to boost greenery.

We will only be removing and replacing those trees that are dead, dying (with a useful life expectancy of less than two years) or dangerous (they pose a risk to the community in the short term).

Street Tree Assessments

Our arborists have completed individual tree assessments based on the above criteria and in Snowden Drive, we are proposing to remove one tree and will be planting a total of three trees which includes an additional two trees in vacant locations.

Replacement Tree Species

Council's arborist has proposed three appropriate tree species to be considered for planting. In some cases, we will need to select two complementary species to be planted on either side of the road to accommodate constraints such as power lines, service pits and other infrastructure that exists within the street.

Survey Results

Council sought feedback (reply paid mail survey and online) on the preferred option of tree species directly affected residents would like to see planted in their street until Friday 21 September 2018.

Your street has selected Option 1 – Callistemon viminalis Weeping Bottle Brush.

In Snowden Drive a total of seven votes were received. Three votes for Option 1, and two votes each for Options 1 and 2.

Council will be responsible for the care of the new street trees for the first two years as they become established. However our residents can play a vital role in their successful establishment by keeping an eye on them and reporting to Council if they see the tree is not looking well or has been damaged.

The trees will then become part of Council’s proactive annual maintenance program, where they will be checked and pruned if necessary as part of an annual program.

Option 1 - Single species (both sides of the road)

Callistemon viminalis - Weeping Bottle Brush

This is a pretty, bird-attracting native tree with a heavy crown due to the profusion of brilliant red flowers in spring and summer. It is the weight of these flowers that gives it a pendulous habit.

Mature Size (h x w): 6-8 x 6-8m
Form: Pendulous

Option 2 - Combination of species 

Power line side

Corymbia Citrodora 'Scentuous' - Dwarf Pink

This  is a slightly narrow-domed tree that doesn't shed its branches. It has a smooth trunk that may be slightly mottled. The bark is a pink salmon in colour. Leaves are narrow and highly aromatic when crushed smelling strongly of lemon. This tree features lovely cream-coloured flowers in summer.

Non-power line side 

Corymbia maculata 'Little Mac' - Dwarf Spotted Gum

This tree grows straight and tall. The bark is smooth and cream in colour with grey spots from the older bark, providing contrast and interest with its mottled appearance. The leaves are dark green and glossy and from autumn to winter, small clusters of fragrant white flowers appear attracting birds and honey bees to the area.

Form: Oval

Option 3 - Single species (both sides of the road) 

Brachychiton populneus x acerifolius 'Bella Pink'  - Bella Pink Hybrid Brachychiton

This is a small to medium sized shade tree offering glossy green foliage and pretty clusters of salmon pink, bell-shaped flowers in summer. As a grafted tree, it is more compact in size which makes it highly suitable for domestic landscapes. Flowers attract birds.
