The development of a new multi-sport pavilion meets the current and future needs of the tenant sports clubs and newly relocated tennis clubs (Oakleigh and North Oakleigh Tennis Clubs) and deliver on Council’s commitment to deliver flexible, sustainable, accessible and quality community facilities.

This project was completed in 2020.

Stage 1: Tennis Courts

The tennis courts were completed in 2018.

May 2018 update

Some buried low-level asbestos discovered during construction works at Caloola Reserve has been safely removed (8 May 2018).

The works on the construction of eight new synthetic tennis courts at Caloola Reserve (Atkinson St Oakleigh) were delayed following the discovery of the material towards the eastern end of the work site.

Council began works to remediate the site (on 30 April 2018) with the works expected to take around five days (subject to weather).

The removal of the material occurred under the supervision of environmental auditors, accredited by the Environmental Protection Authority, and did not pose any risks to local residents or users of the reserve.

Background

December 2017

At its meeting on Tuesday 12 December 2017, Council awarded the tender for the construction of eight new synthetic tennis courts at Caloola Reserve (Atkinson Street, Oakleigh) to Turf One Pty Ltd.

This fantastic new tennis facility will become home to the Oakleigh and North Oakleigh Tennis Clubs, improving tennis infrastructure in Oakleigh and providing more opportunities for people to play tennis.

The construction of eight courts means will see the current brick pavilion demolished to provide the required space for the project. The resident soccer and cricket clubs and tennis clubs will be housed in temporary buildings until a new multi-sport pavilion is designed and constructed (as part of Stage 2 of the project).

The Oakleigh and North Oakleigh Tennis Clubs have agreed to merge into one tennis club prior to occupying the new tennis facility.

August 2017

Earlier this year, Council sought community feedback regarding the installation of eight synthetic grass tennis courts at Caloola Reserve, as well as redeveloping the existing sports pavilion.

As part of this, the Oakleigh and Oakleigh North Tennis Clubs would be relocated to Caloola Reserve.

Council resolved at its 27 June 2017 meeting to begin discussions with these tennis clubs about the possible relocation.

The relocation of the Oakleigh Tennis Club will provide additional space on the Oakleigh Recreation Centre site to ensure the best possible design for the new Oakleigh Recreation Centre Indoor Stadium and Waverley Gymnastics facility which is being delivered as part of Council’s 2017/18 and 2018/19 capital works programs.

In August 2017, Council resolved to begin the tender process for the installation of the eight synthetic grass tennis courts with LED lighting at Caloola Reserve, which is the first stage of the project.

As part of its decision making, Council considered feedback that local community members had provided on the proposal. Council received 39 responses to its survey (the response was overwhelmingly positive with 32 for the project and seven against) and is grateful to those who contributed their views.

From that feedback, Council has committed to a number of measures to protect the amenity of local residents, including more regular parking patrols, reducing light spillage from the courts, and the addition of a basketball half-court in stage 2.
