Advocating for smoking ban

Eaton Mall in Oakleigh

Council has pushed long and hard for the Victorian Government to introduce a ban on smoking in outdoor dining areas.

Having been a strong advocate for a ban, Council welcomed the Victorian Government's announcement (made in August 2015) that a ban would be introduced.

The ban came into effect on 1 August 2017. For Council's response to the government's announcement, see this media release.

Background

The Monash community is strongly in support of a ban, with 75% of surveyed residents saying they approve. Local parents often contact Council to express concern that their children are exposed to second hand smoke when their families eat out at local cafes.

In February 2015, Monash Mayor Paul Klisaris wrote to Health Minister Jill Hennessy, encouraging her to begin a consultation period with businesses, with a view to implementing a ban as soon as possible.

Here is Cr Klisaris' letter:

Monash Council has been a strong advocate for this ban since 2011. After lobbying on this issue for many years, we welcomed the former Victorian Government's commitment in 2014 to introduce a ban.

In 2007, Monash Council was the first council in Victoria to introduce a ban on smoking near playgrounds. This ban now applies across Victoria.
