2022 Outstanding Advocate of People with Disabilities

Shirleen has been volunteering with Vision Australia for more than seven years in various roles. But, most importantly, with the Monash Dinner Group and the Eyes Right - Self Help Support Group.

The Monash Dinner Group goes out for dinner at venues in the Monash municipality. Shirleen picks up group members and takes them to the venue; supports group members by reading menus; and providing other support as it’s required.

Eyes Right meets at the Mount Waverley Community Centre each month and Shirleen supports members by reading printed materials, helps food preparation and any other tasks that are asked of her.

Shirleen also drives for Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria, taking three Monash residents to square-dancing sessions for more than 20 years while assisting many blind or low-vision people to be able to learn square-dancing.

Without her support, these important groups would not be able to continue.
