Expanding Horizons is a dynamic two-year partnership between the City of Monash and Holmesglen Institute, designed to empower the business community to confidently employ and retain job seekers with disabilities.
Meet Phil, a City of Monash resident and a shining example of the initiative's impact.
With the support of OC Connections, a dedicated Disability Services and Support Organisation in Monash, Phil was engaged in the Expanding Horizons process.
Through workshops and tailored training, Phil developed job-ready skills before securing a placement at Active Monash, where he thrived.
Phil’s journey with Expanding Horizons
Support from OC Connections: From the onset, Phil received continuous support from OC Connections, ensuring he was comfortable and well-prepared for each step of the process.
Skill development: Phil completed various short courses, gaining invaluable experience working across different divisions of OCC Enterprises.
Job readiness training: Phil enrolled in the Expanding Horizons REACH program at Holmesglen Institute, where he received training tailored to enhance his job readiness.
TAFE experience: He thrived in the TAFE learning environment, enjoying both the course content and the supportive atmosphere.
Workplace internship: Through the Workplace Internship module at Holmesglen, Phil acquired hands-on experience, further preparing him for the workforce.
Work placement: He secured a work placement at Active Monash, where he thrived.
Ongoing support and achievements
Phil thoroughly enjoyed his placement at Active Monash, where he was actively involved in administrative tasks and continuously found opportunities to enhance his skills.
He received unwavering support from the team at Active Monash and his support coach from OC Connections.
Work placements, such as Phil’s, are recognised as one of the most effective ways to foster confidence, skill development, and improved employment outcomes for individuals with disabilities. Phil remains enthusiastic about his future and continues to work towards achieving his employment goals.
