Although the City of Monash was created as recently as December 1994, the area's history of settlement stretches back more than 150 years.
The lowest and flattest areas of the City of Monash roughly follow the line of the Gippsland railway and Dandenong Road across the southwest corner of the city.
Aerial photographs of the Shire of Mulgrave in 1946 show a rural area laid out in straight lines.
Since the beginning of white settlement, the area that is now the City of Monash has experienced dramatic and rapid environmental change.
