Tennis club signs as tenant

The $26.7million Monash Tennis Centre in the Glen Waverley Sports Hub is closer to serving up its first on-court action, with Glenvale Tennis Club signing-on as a tenant club.
In a joint partnership with Monash City Council, the Andrews Labor Government is investing $21 million in the new tennis and golf precinct to keep local sports clubs thriving as it builds North East Link.
When construction of the centre is completed and players take to the courts in 2024, Glenvale Tennis Club will hold a licence agreement with Council for eight of the courts, as well as having access to player amenities and an upstairs social space in the newly-developed state-of-the-art multi-sport pavilion.
There will also be brand new courts and facilities available for casual use seven days a week and to accommodate local and regional tournaments, including for players from across Melbourne who have previously played at the Boroondara Tennis Centre.
Glenvale is currently a near neighbour of the Glen Waverley Sports Hub project, with its existing courts adjoining the north-western edge of the golf course.
For several years, the club has been eager to expand beyond its current six-court facility, however site constraints, court base structural issues and an ageing pavilion have prevented this from occurring. A move to the new multi-sports venue gives the club great potential to grow its membership and grow the sport of tennis in the area.
Glenvale president Brendan Mahon said the club was looking forward to a bright future at the new venue.
“The Glenvale Tennis Club is excited to be moving to a new facility with access to more courts, built to International Tennis Federation standards at a magnificent sporting complex,” he said. “There will be some sadness to be moving from our home for over 40 years, but the upgrade of facilities should lead to a more enjoyable tennis and social offering to our members.
“The club is thankful to the Victorian Government and Monash Council for this opportunity to support tennis in the local community.”
Member for Mount Waverley Matt Fregon said it was exciting that plans for the new facility were progressing.
“Not only will North East Link fix the missing link in our freeway network, but we’re also delivering massive sports upgrades along the way,” he said. “The new sporting precinct will deliver huge benefits by providing 18 new courts and a new multi-sport pavilion to support community sport.”
Monash Mayor Stuart James said he was delighted that Glenvale will be taking to the courts and calling the centre home when it opens in 2024.
“We are thrilled to have Glenvale Tennis Club sign on as a tenant club at the new centre,” Cr James said. “Tennis is extremely popular in Monash and has the highest participation rate of any organised sport in the area. This is an exciting project for the community and will add greatly to what is a thriving sports and recreation precinct.
“We are confident that this opportunity will continue an outstanding partnership between Council and the Glenvale Tennis Club and that the club will go from strength to strength at this exciting new venue.”
Tennis Victoria CEO Adam Crameri also welcomed the announcement.
“Tennis Victoria is pleased the Glenvale Tennis Club will call the Monash Tennis Centre home from 2024,” he said. “We look forward to the new centre creating a safe, inclusive and thriving tennis community for Monash.”
Glen Waverley Golf Club will join Glenvale as co-users of the pavilion and upgraded facilities in the Glen Waverley Sports Hub, making it another important partner in Council’s vision for a thriving multi-sport precinct.
It is expected that construction will commence in mid-2022, and that the centre will be ready for play in early-2024.
