Monash Council has voted to support its residents and employees in advocating for marriage equality.

Monash Mayor Rebecca Paterson said Council supported the right of all residents and Council employees to live and work free of prejudice and discrimination.

“We think it’s important for our residents and employees to know that Council believes every person is entitled to equal opportunities in life,” Cr Paterson said.

Same-sex marriage is legal in 29 countries/regions around the world including the United Kingdom, Canada, America and New Zealand. However, Australia is yet to update the Marriage Act 1961 to allow same-sex marriage across our nation.

Cr Paterson said Council would continue to ensure its programs and services were inclusive of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer/Questioning (LGBTIQ) community, and would support events such as the Pride March and the Midsumma Festival.
