Media response - accident in Clayton
Published on 18 February 2025
Approach from Herald Sun
We are writing and updating a story on a bus collision involving six disabled students on Moriah St this morning. We've been chatting with local residents who say they have been having issues with parking and the traffic coming through the street between Princes and Centre roads for years.
In relation to this story, we would like comments from the council on the following questions:
- Was council aware of this issue with space in Moriah St?
- Have residents been in contact with council regarding these issues? How often?
- What is the council doing to address Moriah St residents' concerns about the state of parking in the street, considering how narrow it is?
Response
We hope that everyone involved this this morning’s accident is OK.
Like many inner-suburban councils, our residential streets can at times be difficult to navigate when cars are parked on both sides of the street. Moriah Street is a typical width of street found within Monash and meets the road width expectations for vehicle movement under the Victorian road rules.
After a resident approach in 2018 and in consultation with the community, Council introduced staggered one hour parking restrictions to reduce the amount of cars parked all day in Moriah Street. These restrictions are still in place. In 2022 we distributed parking protocols to Moriah St properties to encourage parking practices that allowed for better traffic flow.
Following this morning’s accident, we will be in contact with Victoria Police who were onsite to gain a better understanding of the cause. If further changes are required, then we will consider these in consultation with the local residents.
