Refurbishment and upgrade of Central Reserve Grandstand

Exciting changes are coming to Central Reserve with an upgrade of the 50-year-old grandstand and new space created for an Artisan Hub for the Waverley Woodworkers and Waverley Gem Club.
The refurbishment will occur in two stages with stage one involving structural repairs and an upgrade of the grandstand.
The grandstand is a feature of the reserve but needs some structural improvements and the seating, steps, floors and handrails need updating and restoration.
Stage one of works include:
- Demolition and roof replacement works including structural works
- Removing a redundant players’ race and associated brick work
- Repairing concrete at the grandstand
- Repairing seating, hand rail replacements and other maintenance works
A tender process has been undertaken for these works, with 2Construct Pty Ltd awarded the tender. The total budget for this project is $608,000. The works start mid-May 2019 and are expected to be completed in July 2019. There will be no impact to the sports ground or the Central Reserve Pavilion.
Works will take place during weekdays with some works to possibly occur on Saturdays when no games are allocated to the reserve to ensure there is no disruption to clubs. The works are being scheduled in two stages so there will also be no disruption to football finals.
Sustainability
The new roofing material for the grandstand has a high solar reference of 0.77, allowing 77% of the sun’s heat to be reflected improving the experience for spectators using the grandstand. The roof insulation includes the use of spacer systems to ensure full thermal performance of the insulation, making it more efficient. The new roofing systems have been designed to allow the option for water run-off to be collected and re-used when the second stage of works are designed.
Existing timber seating is being recycled and re-used. The new lighting systems are energy efficient LEDs and materials specified for the project are predominantly locally manufactured with the use of Australian steel specified.
Waverley Woodworkers and Waverley Gem Club
The co-location of the Waverley Woodworkers and Waverley Gem Club into the Central Reserve Grandstand will provide both groups with a permanent home designed for their specific needs, and an opportunity for the wider Monash community to visit an interesting artistic space that fosters friendship and lifelong learning.
Stage two of the project will involve the internal refurbishment of the grandstand to meet the needs of both groups. Council has consulted with both the Waverley Woodworkers and the Waverley Gem Club and they have been an integral part of the design phase.
