New strategies address future of open spaces and tree canopy coverage

Two strategies that will guide the future liveability of Monash have been adopted by Council.

The Monash Open Space Strategy and Urban Landscape and Canopy Vegetation Strategy were considered by Council at the 30 October meeting and highlighted how important access to green open spaces, gardens and trees are to community wellbeing, health and the urban environment.

The strategies provide further evidence that urban environments with green spaces such as parks, trees and and natural reserves are desirable, valuable places to live. This is often reflected in direct economic benefit including better health outcomes and higher property values.

Mayor Paul Klisaris said the many benefits of open spaces were of major significance to the Monash community.

“These spaces provide so many opportunities for physical activity, play, connecting with family and friends as well as the mental health of simply looking at some green space,” Cr Klisaris said.

“We want to encourage more people to use and benefit from Monash’s open spaces now, and into the future.”

Cr Klisaris said the Urban Landscape and Canopy Vegetation Strategy will update Council’s policy framework for landscaping and vegetation in Monash, particularly for new development.

This will help ensure that gardens, trees and landscape strike the right balance between development and planted areas, including the guidance on the right tree in the right place. 

The Strategy also provides a resource for community education and engagement.

The strategies set out clear frameworks for the future on how Council will plan for open spaces to meet existing and future needs and how to increase tree canopy coverage, especially as the population of Monash continues to grow.
