Monash bin changes to start in August 2022
Published on 27 April 2022
Monash is changing its bin collection service from August this year, moving to a weekly collection for food and garden waste and a fortnightly collection for landfill rubbish waste.
Council’s decision follows its largest ever consultation, with more than 7000 contributions in an online and phone survey, pop-up information sessions in person and online, and through phone calls and emails.
Mayor Stuart James said the feedback had been invaluable, helping Council to understand some of the concerns of residents and how to address them.
“Thank you to those who took the time to contribute to our consultation, we really appreciate the feedback and information you provided,” Cr James said.
“We recognise this is a big change for some of you. We’ve listened to your concerns and will be providing some additional support for those of you concerned about space in your bin, nappies, and smell.”
Cr James said Council has referenced the community feedback to design the new waste services to ensure that additional support is available to assist households with specific waste needs should it be required.
“We’ll be introducing several special considerations residents can ask for, including the option for a larger landfill bin or second small bin for free for families with two or more children in nappies, households with members who have medical conditions and specific waste items, and large households with six or more who are in financial hardship,” he said.
Monash will also be reducing the cost for an additional recycling bin for households to $65 per year for a second bin. There is no change to the service for our recycling collection but we recognise from the feedback that some households need more space for recycling materials and are keen to do the right thing.
“We will also send a sample of compostable liners to households. Compostable liners are used in the kitchen caddies and are easy to purchase, similar to rubbish bin bags, but the sample will give households an idea of what to look for and let people see if they are something they want to purchase in the future,” Cr James said.
All Monash households will receive an information pack prior to the change, including a letter from the Mayor, the 2022-23 waste collection calendar, a guide to recycling and an A-Z list of recycling in Monash. QR codes and web links to easily find helpful information available on our website will also be included.
