Council abandons Central Car Park project

Monash Council will not proceed with a major redevelopment in Glen Waverley to create a new community precinct, including a state-of-the-art library and town square on the Council-owned Central Car Park site.

At Tuesday’s meeting Council resolved it would not pursue the project. Six councillors voted against the project, five for.

Mayor Paul Klisaris said it was disappointing that the project, which aimed to deliver upon the vision set out in the Glen Waverley Activity Centre Masterplan, did not receive the support of all Councillors.

“This project has been the subject of extensive planning and community consultation over more than five years to create a state-of-the-art community precinct including a town square, a new library and car parking that would be the central heart of Glen Waverley and it’s extremely disappointing that it was not supported,” Cr Klisaris said.

“This was an opportunity for Council to ensure that the Glen Waverley Activity Centre continued to thrive by responding to the changing needs of the community with a visionary development that would have transformed Kingsway into a modern community retail and residential hub.

“An expanded state-of-the-art library catering for all ages was a significant part of this project and I believe would have been highly valued by our community.”

A masterplan of the Glen Waverley activity centre was undertaken in 2013 and has since been used to help develop a structure plan and sustainable transport plan for this area, which included the possible development of a community retail and residential hub on the Central Car Park site.
