Media response - unpaid rates
Published on 07 March 2025
Approach from Herald Sun
We're looking at unpaid council rates across Victoria. Are you able to help with the following questions?
- How much is the total outstanding arrears in council rates and charges, including waste service fees as at February 18, 2025?
- Of that figure, how much is from the 2024/25 financial year (does that figure include ratepayers with overdue installments)?
- Of that figure, how much is two years or more overdue?
- Does the council have an active Sale of Properties with Unpaid Rates policy?
Response
Noting that reporting timeframe is to end of January.
How much is the total outstanding arrears in council rates and charges, including waste service fees as at end of January?
$6.5m (compared to $6.3m for the previous year)
Of that figure, how much is from the 2024/25 financial year (does that figure include ratepayers with overdue instalments)?
$635,000
Of that figure, how much is two years or more overdue?
$3.7m
Does the council have an active Sale of Properties with Unpaid Rates policy?
Council can consider legal action on unpaid rates, and this includes property sales, but this is not something we would consider unless under extraordinary circumstances.
