Media response - bin latch program trial

Published on 07 June 2024

Approach from ABC Melbourne radio

We’re doing a story this afternoon about Colin Cox’s LitterLock which is being trialled in the Monash City Council bin latch trial. We’d like a statement about how the bin latch trial is going, what results have been found, and what updates there are on it so that we can read it on-air.

Response

Monash Council has been trialling bin latches on two residential streets to help prevent waste from escaping. Residents on both streets have been surveyed about the trial, with most people finding the devices easy to use and resulting in reduced litter on their streets and in our drains and waterways. Pleasingly, over 90% of respondents indicated they would continue using the latch if it was left on their bin. We will use this information from residents to review the program and how we use it in the future.

More information.
