Media response - waste levy

Published on 05 September 2023

Approach from Herald Sun

We have compared council waste rates across Victoria and your council, Monash City Council was among one of the LGA's with the highest increases year on year.

  1. We were wondering if you have any comments to give context as to what has changed?
  2. What are you doing to deal with the rising costs of waste management (which all councils are dealing with)?

Response

Monash Council has the lowest rates for any council in Victoria on a per capita basis. Our annual Recycling and Waste Levy has increased by $6 per household in response to increases in both recycling processing costs following the global recycling crisis and EPA levies imposed by the Victorian Government. Monash’s $52 annual levy to ratepayers is a cost recovery mechanism that reflects the pressures of Victoria’s evolving waste sector, as similar charges or levies are implemented differently across councils – it is difficult to truly compare the figures. Pensioners in Monash receive an additional $52 rebate to offset the Recycling and Waste charge.
