Media response - traffic congestion around schools

Published on 12 June 2023

Approach from The Age

I'm doing a story about traffic congestion around schools and i'm hoping to get some comment from Monash Council.

  1. I've heard there are traffic congestion issues around Oakleigh Grammar, and a few other schools.
  2. Is the council aware of traffic congestion issues around schools during pick up and drop offs?
  3. What is the council doing to alleviate these issues?
  4. Can traffic congestion around schools, if not managed properly,
  5. Are there guidelines for schools to help?
  6. Are less children taking the bus/public transport / or riding/ walking to school?
  7. Has there been a change since the pandemic?
  8. Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Response

Councils works with schools and local residents to create traffic settings around schools that allow for the safe drop off and pick up of our most vulnerable road users – children. We do this by enforcement of on-street parking limits, creating dedicated drop-off zones near schools and working with local residents to ensure that they are able to park and use their street network.

The size of some schools in Monash mean that traffic congestion is inevitable during pick-up and drop-off times, and we are always willing to work with schools to do this. This includes investing $4.6m in the next financial year on our footpaths and cycleways to encourage active transport. We also have urged the Victorian Government to take action on the school crossings program to better ensure safety of our students.
