Media response - infringement notices

Published on 17 October 2023

Approach from The Age

I’m working on a story about infringement penalties at a council level. The Road Safety Act gives councils the discretion to decide penalty units for certain offences. I’m looking to get some information about your council’s infringement penalties.

  1. Does your council set any traffic infringements to the minimum penalty units? If yes, can you please provide information on which infringements?
  2. Has your council changed infringements to the minimum or maximum penalty units since 2020?
  3. Is your council currently considering lowering penalty units to the minimum?
  4. Does your council have views on the impacts of infringement penalties on the community?
  5. How much revenue does your council make from traffic infringement penalties, could you provide stats from the most recent financial report?

Response

Monash Council issues infringement notices related to parking infractions under the Road Safety Act.

Monash is one of a very small number of Councils that do not charge for parking. Ensuring our on-street and off-street car parks are used within parking restrictions is the most effective way for Council to ensure parking turnover for businesses in our busy activity centres.

For inclusion or background, not attribution

Council received $5.8m in parking infringements during the 2022/23 financial year, our infringement information outlines how people can request a payment plan if appropriate. These are issued to the maximum penalty amount under the Act, this has not changed since 2020.
