Media response - housing affordability

Published on 30 June 2023

Approach from Australian Financial Review

Hoping to get a comment from Council/ the mayor on whether Monash is looking at ways to disincentivise landlords from renting out properties in the short-stay accom market and move them into the longer-term rental market as a means of tackling housing affordability.

Response

Monash does not currently have a tax or other policies that disincentive short-stay accommodation properties.

However, Council has recently endorsed a Draft Monash Affordable Housing Strategy for consultation. This identifies four pillars through which Council can support increased housing affordability and increase the supply of affordable housing in Monash: regulation, partnerships, investment, and advocacy. This draft strategy will be released for consultation in mid-July and I look forward to hearing feedback from our community.
