Media response - Surburban Rail Loop: Clayton and Monash precincts

Approach from The Age

No specific questions, journalist asked for a statement for a follow-up article on the Surburban Rail Loop - with a focus on future Clayton and Monash stations and precints.

Response

As home to the Monash National Employment and Innovation Cluster, the proposed Clayton and Monash SRL precincts already have a bright future. The Cluster has the largest concentration of jobs outside of the Melbourne CBD, supported by world class enterprises, including Monash University, Monash Medical Centre, Monash Children’s Hospital, the Victorian Heart Hospital, CSIRO, and the Australian Synchrotron. There is significant investment driving the growth of knowledge and technology industries in the Cluster such as the soon to be completed Moderna Vaccine Facility.

The Suburban Rail Loop will better connect this exciting area with the rest of Melbourne. Whilst this transformational project has the support of Council, we have previously expressed reservations about the precinct planning process. It is vital that planning for these precincts focuses development and density in appropriate areas around the SRL station precincts – with clear information and genuine consultation with the people who already live and work here.

Monash Council welcomes the opportunity to make a submission early next year to the Draft Precinct Visions and look forward to continued productive conversations with the Suburban Rail Loop Authority. We also encourage members of the Monash community to share their views as local input into this transformational project is crucial.
