Have your say on cycling connection

Monash residents can now have their say on a concept proposal for a 1.4km cycling connection linking two of the City’s major trails, Scotchmans Creek and Djerring in Oakleigh.
This project proposal combines five separate components to complete the connection:
- Atkinson Street trial demonstration cycleway (between Dandenong and Atherton roads)
- Hanover Street dedicated cycleway
- Burlington Street to Djerring Trail link
- Atkinson Street/Dandenong Road intersection cycleway crossing
- Scotchmans Creek Trail to Dandenong Road.

A first of its kind for Monash, the Atkinson Street section will test a new type of cycling infrastructure made of ‘quick build’ materials. It will allow for adjustments to resolve any issues that arise both before and during the trial with the aim of progressing to a permanent cycleway in the future.
The Atkinson Street section will require a reduction in the number of existing car parking spaces, from 46 spaces to approximately 22 spaces, on the east side of Atkinson Street.
Monash Mayor Stuart James said the proposed linking of the two trails would have several benefits for the community.
“Building a protected cycling connection between the two trails will encourage cycling for people of all ages and abilities,” Cr James said.
“It’ll provide positive health and recreational benefits but also improve cyclist safety around the Oakleigh Activity Centre and establish an important north-south cycling link within the City.”
As well as community consultation, Council will also consult with the Department of Transport on plans for the dedicated cycleway along Hanover Street between Atherton Road and Burlington Street.
