Members of the Hellenic Presidential Guard (Evzones) will visit Oakleigh on Sunday, 25 March – Greek National Day.
The Evzones is Greece’s pre-eminent ceremonial military unit and renowned for the soldiers’ discipline and uniform. The unit guards the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Presidential Mansion in Athens.
Mayor Paul Klisaris said this visit to Oakleigh will be a celebration of diversity and ceremony, featuring local performers, musicians and cultural groups.
Oakleigh is the epicentre of Melbourne’s Greek culture and this visit is a great honour,” Cr Klisaris said.
“We are expecting a big crowd to welcome the Evzones and I encourage people to come and enjoy the event, which is a great show of the culture and community we enjoy in Monash.”
Cr Klisaris said the event was organised by the Oakleigh Village Traders Association with support from City of Monash.
“As a man of Greek heritage I have long admired the Evzones for their strength, honour, courage and valour,” Cr Klisaris said.
“And as the proud Mayor of Monash I am thrilled to welcome the Evzones to our wonderful municipality and for people from all over Melbourne to come and enjoy a special day of Greek culture.”
