Freeway Reserve Retarding Basin Upgrade

Published on 12 August 2016

Melbourne Water is currently planning to upgrade the Freeway Reserve Retarding Basin to ensure it continues to operate safely.

The Freeway Reserve Retarding Basin plays an important function in managing stormwater in your local area. When the retarding basin fills, the embankment wall holds back stormwater to reduce flood risk to local homes and businesses.

Upgrade work on the Freeway Reserve Retarding Basin involves:

  • Removal of all trees and shrubs from the embankment and spillway
  • Construction of an internal sand filter along the embankment crest to prevent erosion occurring through the embankment
  • Replacement of the grates and safety rails at the existing low level outlet
  • Installation of water level detection and telemetry equipment.

CPB Black and Veatch Joint Venture will deliver these works on behalf of Melbourne Water.

A site office is expected to be set up in late August 2016.

Construction is scheduled to start in September 2016 and will take approximately five months to complete, weather permitting. Hours of work are between 7am to 6pm, Monday – Friday. Some works may be required on Saturdays from 7am to 1pm.

We will work to minimise any inconvenience during construction. We do expect some changes during construction including:

  • Some noise, dust and vibration
  • The shared use path at the top of the embankment will be temporarily closed. Closures and detours will be clearly signed in advance
  • A site compound is expected to be set up next to the car park north of the park, off Kernot Avenue
  • An increase in traffic along Monash Drive, Kernot Avenue and around Freeway Reserve
  • Changes to parking conditions around Freeway Reserve.

The work area will be fenced off, however we ask park users to take extra care near work areas during construction and advise keeping your dog on a lead for its own safety.
