Big first serve for new tennis centre and multisport pavilion

The $26.7 million Monash Tennis Centre and multisport pavilion in the Glen Waverley Sports Hub is ready to serve up the action, with the centre set for its official opening on 23 March.
Three years in the making, this exciting new venue in Glen Waverley’s Jells Park is the result of a successful partnership between Council and the Victorian Government, through North East Link, with the Victorian Government contributing $21 million in funding and Council $5.77 million.
The facility features a regional level tennis venue with 18 courts, including two show courts; a multisport pavilion for tennis and golf participants; golf practice facilities; public open space improvements; car parking; a café and supporting infrastructure.
Glenvale Tennis Club will relocate to the facility and hold a licence agreement with Council for eight of the courts, as well as having access to player amenities and an upstairs social space in the state of the art multisport pavilion.
Courts and facilities will also be available for casual community use and to accommodate local and regional tournaments.
Glen Waverley Golf Club will join Glenvale Tennis Club as co-users of the pavilion and upgraded facilities, making it another important partner in Council’s vision for this thriving multisport precinct.
As well as a successful collaboration between Council and the Victorian Government, the project has been an invaluable partnership between Council, BlueFit the site’s operation manager, and the community.
The tennis centre will be the new home for major tournaments replacing the former tennis centre in Boroondara, where the new North East Link tunnels will connect to an upgraded Eastern Freeway.
Minister for Transport Infrastructure Danny Pearson said the new centre will deliver huge benefits for the community and tennis.
“We're serving up a record investment in local sport, so communities can continue to thrive as we build North East Link.”
Member for Glen Waverley John Mullahy said: "I'm proud to be part of the Allan Labor Government that is investing in local livability as Glen Waverley continues to grow, with world-class sports and recreation facilities, and improved transport options slashing travel time across the north east.”
Monash Mayor Cr Nicky Luo is thrilled to celebrate the completion of the new facility.
“The $26.7 million tennis and multisport facility has been a significant project for Council and I’m delighted that it will be opening soon,” Cr Luo said.
“Participation in tennis continues to grow in Monash, and the new facility will be a massive addition to an already thriving sports and recreation precinct that includes the Glen Waverley Golf Course, the Waverley Netball Centre, and the Waverley Softball Association.
“I want to thank the Victorian Government for their support, as well as everyone who has worked on this project - which will be a game-changer for tennis in Monash,” Cr Luo added.
Tamatha Harding, Tennis Victoria Interim CEO, said Tennis Victoria is thrilled to welcome the Monash Tennis Centre to the Victorian tennis community.
"Tennis Victoria aims to create safe, inclusive and thriving Victorian tennis communities that enable more people to play tennis more often. This new facility in the City of Monash will offer the opportunity for club-based play as well as future regional tournaments and competitions.
"We thank the City of Monash and the Victorian State Government for their investment in this new venue."
