Victoria is expecting extreme weather this week, with the risk of flooding due to heavy rainfall.

It’s important to be prepared in the event of a storm.

Here are some basic things you can do to get ready:

  • Prepare an emergency plan – having one means you can think clearly, have a greater sense of control and make better decisions
  • Download the VicEmergency app or visit emergency.vic.gov.au for current incidents and warnings
  • Keep supplies in your home such as candles, torches, first-aid kits, canned food, bottled water and a radio (in case of power and telephone outages)
  • Know how and where to turn off your gas, electricity and water
  • Know who and when to call when faced with an emergency.
  • Visit the Victoria State Emergency Service (SES) website to find your local flood guides and more information on how to prepare yourself and your home.

Can you get sandbags from the council?

Residents may contact Council to find out where to get sandbags.

Before a major storm or flood, Monash Council may make available a limited number (max 10 per household) of empty sandbags to residents so they can fill them (issued from the Monash Recycling & Waste Centre, 380 Ferntree Gully Road, Notting Hill 3168).

You can also get them from some DIY or building supplies shops.

Who to call

  • For life-threatening emergencies, dial 000
  • The State Emergency Service (SES) can help residents with damage to private property. For more information, phone 132 500 or go to www.ses.vic.gov.au
  • For storm damage to roads, footpaths and nature strips, call Council on 9518 3555 (during business hours and for after-hours emergencies).

During a storm event, there could be many affected locations across the municipality, and many residents contacting Council. At these times, please be patient while we respond.

Council is working closely with SES in preparation for this storm event, inspecting drainage pits in flood prone areas and organising additional sandbagging in anticipation to protect residents’ properties.

We will be clearing roads and paths to make them safe, which could take some time depending on the scale of the storm. We will then return to clear the nature strips as soon as practicable in following weeks. Please try to help Council by keeping any debris clear of roads and paths until it can be removed.
