Shane McCluskey was elected to represent the Waverley Park Ward, for the period 2024–2028.
Shane was first elected to Council in 2016 in the previous Mulgrave Ward.
Shane served as Deputy Mayor in 2017/2018 and 2020/2021, and as Monash's Mayor in 2018/2019.
Shane and his family are Wheelers Hill residents and have been living in Monash since 2002. Shane spent his childhood growing up in a big family of eight siblings in West Footscray.
Shane is a professional Firefighter, and has been since 1990, with Fire Rescue Victoria and holds the rank of Station Officer, currently in the role of Multicultural Liaison Officer. For much of that time, he has worked in and around the City of Monash.
Over many years, Shane has established deep connections to, and an affinity with, many local community organisations and bodies within his local community. He has performed roles in both an administration and 'hands on' coaching and mentoring capacity at sporting clubs and community run bodies, such as the Waverley Park Hawks JFC, Waverley Park Hawks Auskick Centre and the Brandon Park Children’s Centre.
"My family and I love living in Monash," Shane said. "It has a fantastic mix of green space and garden aspects, vibrant activity centres, great schools, a focus on the arts and an eclectic mix of people and cultures.
"I hope to assist in not only maintaining that, but growing those facilities, focuses and opportunities. I have a great interest in sport and recreation, with a focus on youth participation and promoting women in sport."
Whilst he has an appreciation for the existing facilities in his ward, Shane wants to ensure it obtains a significant amount of Council focus, bringing the Ward “up to par” with what other Wards currently enjoy, such as upgrades to infrastructure, sporting fields and recreation areas. He is keen to see Council work with residents and schools to resolve traffic management issues around schools. He will support Waverley Park residents in achieving the best possible amenity outcomes for their estate.
Shane aims to continue to bring some of his best qualities - being compassion, community spirit and a cohesive, cooperative approach - to his role as Councillor in a bid to have those aspects mirrored in his Councillor colleagues.
In addition, Shane values the fact that he comes from a truly independent perspective, without being tied to, or bound by, any preconceived political party-aligned positions. “To me, that is an important facet of what representing residents of Monash is all about."
Shane is a member of the following committees:
