On 12 November 2024, Brian was elected as Deputy Mayor for the 2024-25 term.
He served as Monash’s Deputy Mayor in 2023/2024 as well.
Cr Brian Little is a long-time resident of Monash having raised three children in the area and seen Monash change rapidly over almost three decades.
In his professional life, he has been an engineer for "longer that he would like to admit", having graduated from Monash University with a B.Eng (elec) with 1st class hons and working in the telecommunications industry for most of his professional life. As a professional engineer he understands that the difference between a successful and unsuccessful project is tight governance, good communications and strong resource management.
Cr Little was first elected to Council in 2003 to 2005, but did not contest a further election due to work commitments. He stood again and was re-elected in 2012 and was Monash’s Deputy Mayor in 2018/19.
His focus during his Mayoral year was on steering Council through the economic recovery from COVID-19 to ensure the best outcomes for the community.
“This year has without doubt been the most challenging we have faced as a Council and a community. I am so proud of the collective work of Council in making decisions to care for our community during the pandemic when many in our community were struggling with the loss of their jobs, anxiety about their businesses and concerns about their future.
“These decisions included extending the Hardship assistance program to include a rate deferral, suspending footpath trading fees and a 10% waiver on all rates for the 2020/21 financial year.
“Economic recovery will take some time but we have proven that working together, we can achieve great things.”
Cr Little is passionate about sustainability, preserving open space and bushland reserves, economic stability and guiding Council towards a sustainable future and net zero emissions by 2025.
Brian's father was a 'ten pound Pom' who came out in the 1960s bringing his young family half way around the world to build a better life.
"We came out with little more than the clothes we stood up in so I completely understand what migrants go through. My parents worked extraordinarily hard for years to give us the educational opportunities they did not get, so I can relate to many migrant experiences in Monash".
