Waste Management Strategy

At its 30 January 2018 meeting, Council adopted the Waste Management Strategy (2017-2027).

The strategy has been prepared to guide the way waste is managed in the municipality from 2017 to 2027, and to prepare for the future of the waste industry and deliver a sustainable and effective service to the community.

Council has identified 5 goals that will underpin Council’s commitment to waste management and the community:

  • To increase waste diversion from landfill
  • To minimise waste generation
  • Leading the way
  • Serving our customers
  • Pride in our city

Background

There was extensive community consultation conducted throughout the development of the Strategy.

Initial consultation was sought from the community to identify key issues and drivers for change from the perspective of the residents, followed by exhibition of the Draft, and information sessions.

There was also a survey mailed out to residents regarding new options for the hard waste service and waste charges. Following the community’s feedback on two options, at its 30 January 2018 meeting, Council voted to keep the current once-yearly hard waste collection service on a date set by Council, with an option for residents to add one at-call collection each year, at a cost of up to $150 to the householder.
