Monash Volunteer Resource Centre reaches out to disabled people

Monash Safety Register

Many disabled people and their carers are not aware that the Monash Safety Register is a free service that is available to disabled people. It aims to give peace of mind by checking on them regularly and to provide important information in an emergency.

Funded by the City of Monash and the Department of Planning and Community Development, the program is designed to enhance the confidence and safety of both seniors and people with a disability, by offering friendly contact, advice and referral. The Safety Register records vital information, such as next of kin, doctor and relevant health issues, on a private secure data base which can be retrieved by the Glen Waverley and Mt Waverley Police Stations, and the Monash Volunteer Resource Centre, for use in an emergency.

A Safety Register staff member visits residents and gives advice on security around the home and does a basic safety check. Trained volunteers also keep in touch by phone every 5-6 weeks, checking on the client’s well-being and offering support if required. The aim is for people to be connected to their local community.

To become a member of the register, please phone 9562 0414.

Halcyon Flying High

The Halcyon Day Centre continues to go from strength to strength, with planned activity groups continuing at the Glen Waverley centre for people aged from 18 to over 90 years old, suffering from dementia and physical and intellectual disabilities.

The centre provides an important opportunity for those who have limited chances to participate in community activities and to be involved in a program away from home with those in similar situations in a safe and secure environment.

Thanks to the activities and care provided at the centre, full time carers, whether they are spouses, children, parents or others, are given a break from their daily duties.

For more information, phone 9561 8282.
