The City of Monash is getting ready to celebrate, with preparations for the 2012 Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival well underway.
Culture, entertainment and celebrations for people of all ages will be on the menu in 2012, with a bumper crowd expected to flock to Kingsway for next month's Festival to celebrate the Year of the Dragon.
Sunday, 5 February from 11am – 8pm in Kingsway, Glen Waverley.
Monash Mayor Stefanie Perri said the Festival was a great multicultural celebration for all the community.
"Each year tens-of-thousands come to Glen Waverley to celebrate the Chinese New Year and get to experience the culture and atmosphere of a wonderful event first hand," Cr Perri said.
"I look forward to seeing another bumper crowd at the event, which has again been organised by the volunteers from the Monash Chinese Events Organising Committee. They have all done a great job to ensure we have yet another successful festival."
Chair of the committee Vincent Chow said the 2012 Festival would be another great event.
"Of all the 12 zodiac the Dragon is the only mystical being, so powerful it can do wonders, so hopefully the 'Year of the Dragon' will be a turning point for all," Mr Chow said.
The entertainment will feature the traditional Lion Dance, which includes dancers on poles as high as two metres, lots of free giveaways, children’s dancing, traditional music and dance, as well as a karaoke competition and the popular street parade from 7.15pm.
Arts and crafts workshops will also be on offer on the day, with plenty of activities to keep both parents and children entertained.
Monash City Council has provided a $40,000 grant to help run the festival, as well as providing in-kind support.

The 2012 Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival is sponsored by the City of Monash, the Australian Government, the Victorian Government, the Victorian Multicultural Commission, Central Equity, RACV, Lyca Mobile, Century City Walk and Centro The Glen.
