Central Reserve Pavilion Construction Begins

Wednesday, 11 January 2012

Construction of a new, environmentally friendly pavilion at Glen Waverley's Central Reserve has begun.

Monash Mayor Stefanie Perri was joined today by Former Australian Test players and Richmond Cricket Club members Graham Manou and Jim Higgs, members of Mazenod Old Collegians Football Club, Mount Waverley MP Michael Gidley and Monash Councillors Greg Male and Jieh-Yung Lo, to celebrate the start of the $1.8 million project at the North Oval of the reserve.

"It's a great day for Central Reserve and for sport in the City of Monash," Cr Perri said.

"Once complete, this pavilion will include state-of-the-art environmental friendly features, including solar panels on the roof, passive wall heating and cooling generation, rainwater harvesting for watering the garden and toilet flushing, as well as double glazing on the windows and roof insulation.

"We are very proud to support and fund this project that will ensure clubs using and visiting Central Reserve will have access to some of the best facilities in the state. We have worked closely with all clubs to develop a building that will suit their needs."

The new pavilion will feature social club facilities, kitchen, home and away change rooms and umpires change rooms, as well as equal access facilities.

It will be home to Victorian Premier Cricket team Richmond Cricket Club, following their recent move to Monash in September, as well as Mazenod Old Collegians Football Club. Glen Waverley Hawks will move to the existing facilities at the South Oval from 2013. The new pavilion will also be available for community organisations to use outside of training and game days.

Monash Council will contribute $900,000 to the project with the State Government, through Sport and Recreation Victoria, providing $500,000 and the Richmond Football Club, with the support of the AFL, contributing $400,000.

Harris HMC Construction, who also built Monash's award-winning Electra Community Centre and Batesford Community Hub, was awarded the tender to undertake construction of the new pavilion that is expected to be completed by September 2012.
