Emergency - Monash Fire Safety

Wednesday, 7 December 2011

With the weather warming up and the start of summer, Monash City Council is urging residents to prepare for heatwaves in the coming months.

Groups particularly vulnerable to the effects of hot weather include the elderly, young children, pregnant women, persons with a disability, the frail or sick and those living alone.

Monash Mayor Stefanie Perri said it is important for residents to look out for one another on days of extreme heat.

"The hot weather brings with it dangers for vulnerable groups and it's really important that Monash residents look after those amongst us who are more susceptible to the extreme conditions," Cr Perri said.

"Simply checking on a friend or family member could make a vital difference for some during a heatwave."

Some tips for residents to remain safe during periods of extreme heat include:
  • Drink lots of fluids, including water, cordial, juice and small amounts of tea/coffee;
  • Stay inside cool or air-conditioned buildings, like libraries and community centres;
  • Block out the sun and keep your house cool by closing curtains and pulling down exterior sun blinds, turning off unnecessary lights and electronics and opening windows and doors when there is a cool breeze;
  • Take a cool shower or bath;
  • If you do need to go outside, stay in the shade and take plenty of water;
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, gardening or home improvements;
  • Never leave children, adults or animals inside parked vehicles, and;
  • Look out for warning signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion, such as a rapid heart rate, dizziness, nausea, muscle cramps, vomiting and fainting.
