Tuesday, 29 November 2011

Oakleigh Ward Councillor Stefanie Perri has been elected Mayor and Cr Jieh-Yung Lo Deputy Mayor following a Special Meeting of Council on Tuesday, 29 November.

Cr Perri has lived her entire life in the Oakleigh Ward in the City of Monash and attended Clayton North Primary School, Oakleigh East's former Amstel Primary School, Sacred Heart Girls' College Oakleigh and Monash University. She was previously employed as an advisor to the State Member for Oakleigh, Ann Barker and at the Victorian Local Governance Association.

Cr Perri was elected to Council in 2008 and served as Deputy Mayor in 2010. She said she was committed to ensuring the voices of local residents were heard and is currently a member of the Community Grants Program Evaluation Panel, Environmental Advisory Committee, Multicultural Advisory Committee, Oakleigh Recreation Centre Steering Committee, Oakleigh Village Advisory Committee, Senior Citizens Forum, Women's Leadership and Participation Strategy (Chair) and the Strengthening Clayton and Clarinda Project (co-Chair).

"Monash is a vibrant, multicultural City and a place that I think, without a doubt, is the best place to live in Melbourne," Cr Perri said.

"Being Mayor of this fine City is a privilege, an honour and one that I will not take for granted. I'd like to thank my fellow Councillors for their belief in me to take on this role - a role which I will relish as I work to achieve great outcomes for the people of Monash."

Cr Lo is also serving his first term on Council and, in the past three years, has long been committed to improving social outcomes within the City.

Cr Lo currently serves on the Monash Gallery of Art Committee of Management (substitute representative), Community Grants Program Evaluation Panel, Eastern Affordable Housing Alliance, Environmental Advisory Committee, Mayor's Community Award Advisory Committee, Multicultural Advisory Committee and the Young Persons Reference Group

Both Crs Perri and Lo were elected unopposed and praised the work of outgoing Mayor, Greg Male and his Deputy, Micaela Drieberg, who have served in the roles since 16 December 2010.

"Greg and Micaela did a fantastic job throughout the year and deserve to be applauded for all their achievements and accomplishments which have ensured Monash continues to be a thriving community," Cr Perri said.

Crs Perri and Lo will lead their fellow nine councillors until the caretaker period commences on 25 September prior to the local government elections on Saturday 27 October 2012.
