Are Dogs Driving You Barking Mad?

Over 13,500 dogs are registered pets in the City of Monash, and they provide great companionship and rewards for their owners. However, dogs can be annoying to neighbours if they develop bad barking habits.

It's not normal for dogs to bark constantly and it usually means the dog is bored, lonely or frustrated.

Council encourages neighbours to work together to come to a solution with regards to barking dogs. Possible solutions for pet owners include more frequent walks and outings, blocking the dog's view of movement outside the property, visiting a vet to be sure the dog is in good health and getting the dog professional training.

Neighbours are also within their rights to complain to Council if a dog barks repeatedly or if it frequently disturbs the enjoyment of their home amenity or peaceful night's sleep.

Neighbours who complain about barking dogs will be asked to keep a diary recording the frequency and time of the barking. If the dog's behaviour is deemed to be unreasonable, the owner may be requested to take steps to minimise the problem or face prosecution.

For further information please visit Guide - Dogs and Cats or phone 9518 3455.
