Energy Efficiency Achievements
Greenhouse Action Plan
In 2002, Monash demonstrated its commitment to greenhouse gas abatement by joining the voluntary based Cities for Climate Protection™ program.
As part of the program, the Greenhouse Action Plan was developed which identified the key opportunities and challenges associated with greenhouse gas abatement and set a target of 15% reduction in corporate greenhouse gas emissions and 10% in community greenhouse gas emissions.
- Hot Water Unit Replacement - Replacement of electric storage units with instantaneous gas units at Depot and SES
- Public lighting replacement - decorative and non-decorative lights
- Civic Centre Compact Fluoro Replacement - approximately 15 incandescent lamps at Civic Centre are being replaced with compact fluoro lamps
- MGA energy use - Inefficient HVAC replaced by more efficient unit in 2006
Monash, Climate Change and Health
It is anticipated that climate change will have profound effects on human health.
Other issues of concern are the potential increase in the seasonal duration and geographic range of particular infections diseases, such as malaria and dengue fever, which peak in summer months.
However not all is bad news. The World Health Organisation predicts that milder winters will reduce the seasonal winter-time peak in deaths that occurs in temperate regions, while hotter, drier summers may reduce the viability of disease-transmitting mosquito populations in already hot regions of the world.
As a result of these global concerns the City of Monash has developed the
Municipal Public Health Plan, which provides for a more safe and sustainable environment through the support for environmental initiatives such as water and energy conservation and sustainable urban design.
