Youth Plan 2013-2016

Monash Youth and Family Services provide a range of services for young people and families in Monash.

MYFS offers a number of support and developmental programs.

Support programs include: Young Mums' Group and a number of Family Support Programs.

Developmental programs include: School Based Programs, Quiksound and Activate.

Youth Project Workers at MYFS offer generalist support to young people aged 10 - 25 years in the City of Monash. We provide information, referral, support, counselling, support groups, employment assistance, recreation, and advocacy.

Crisis and short term counselling is available for young people aged 10-25 years and their families. There is no cost for the counselling service. MYFS also provides assessment and referral for individuals and families.

What is VOLuME?

VOLuME is the new committee responsible for exploring, planning and delivering the next community volunteer project. MYFS are now calling for young people aged 10-25 years who would like to be involved.

What will you get out of it?

As part of VOLuME you will:
  • gain experience working within a team,
  • develop skills in project management,
  • learn about the needs in your community, and
  • create new friendships.

These skills can be a valuable contribution to your resume and other future endeavours.

FReeZA website::

FReeZA is a Victorian Government initiative that provides funds to young people to plan and organise drug, alcohol and smoke free events. "QUIKSOUND Productions" is the FReeZA committee for the City of Monash.

"Quiksound Productions" is a group of dedicated young people between the ages 12 and 25 working, under the banner of Monash Youth & Family Services, that run drug, alcohol and smoke free music events within the City of Monash.

Who can Join
If you are between 12 and 25 and live, work, study or play in the City of Monash.

We have meetings once a week on Monday nights between 5.30pm to 7pm at Monash Youth & Family Services, 14 Bogong Ave, Glen Waverley.

  • Promotion design and marketing
  • Planning and organising of events
  • Band recruitment
  • Sponsorship
  • MC duties
  • Stage Management
  • Venue management

What is ACTIVATE ?

  • ACTIVATE is a Program for people aged between 10 - 17 years of age
  • ACTIVATE offers free activities for young people
  • ACTIVATE has plenty of space for young people to be with their friends in a supervised and safe environment
  • ACTIVATE has lots of cool equipment including pool tables, a full basketball court and Play station
  • ACTIVATE workers arrange some food for the night and you can help cook
  • ACTIVATE workers are all professional Youth Workers able to offer support and someone to talk to when required.

Where Does It Happen?
Activate is run at Jordanville Community Centre (JCC) on the corner of Batesford Road and Power Avenue Chadstone, next to the basketball stadium.

When Does It Happen?
ACTIVATE runs on Wednesdays from 4.30pm to 6.30pm except on public holidays and school holidays.

Monash Youth Film Festival

Lights! Camera! Shorts!

Monash Youth Film Festival website:

'Lights! Camera! Shorts! Monash Youth Film Festival' is an annual festival planned and organised by local young people. Meetings are held for approximately ten weeks annually starting in August.

What you will be doing?

  • Deciding which films will be screened
  • Choosing which films will win awards
  • Organising and planning the festival
  • Hosting the night
  • And a great opportunity to develop experience in event management
  • Having lots of fun

Film entries are open to any young people under 26 years of age, who live, works, go to school or recreates in the City of Monash.

Films need to be 15 minutes or shorter; and can be VCE or Tertiary Media Projects, Film Clips, Short Films or your life in movie form. The film festival will be held in October at Century City Walk Village Cinema, so you will have your chance to see your film on the big screen!

School Based Programs

MYFS offers all schools in the Monash municipality a range of school based programs.

These programs can be tailored to meet the needs of the school or as stand alone, pre-packaged programs.

Students 10 years old (approx grade 5) and above are eligible for MYFS programs.

Programs include: Peer Mediation, Self Esteem/ Personal Development/ Resilience, Leadership, Diversity, Team Building, Drug/ Alcohol Education, Anger Management.

Family Support

Family Counselling / Support

The family support worker provides counselling & support to individuals, couples and families who have dependant children 0 - 18 who live in the City of Monash.

Appointments are to be made via the family support worker through the Glen Waverley office 9518 3900. The family support worker also provides advocacy and referral to other agencies, specialist services as appropriate and serves as a community resource person.

Parenting Programs

A variety of parenting programs are organised throughout the year and facilitated / Co-facilitated by the Family Support Worker in collaboration with other organisations.

Monash Youth and Family Services Young Mums Group

MYFS are excited to be running the Young Mums' Group again in 2014.

Young Mums is for young women aged 25 and under, parenting children under 3 years old or who are pregnant. The program enables young mothers to increase their social connections and build skills in an inclusive and friendly environment.

An upcoming 9 week program commences on 7 February and runs weekly through to 4 April. The program is held on Fridays from 10am to 12pm at Clayton Community Centre and is open to new members at any stage throughout the term.

School Focused Youth Service (SFYS)

Monash Youth and Family Services will continue to provide the School Focused Youth Service to schools across Monash and parts of Burwood and Vermont. The new School Focused Youth Service (SFYS) is an initiative of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD).

The new and revised program is now aligned with the School Support Services Network (SSSN) of Monash/ Waverley. The main focus of the service is to provide case coordination and support to schools, to assist them to support young people at risk of disengaging from the school system. The aim of the service is to coordinate a range of targeted supports to schools relating to young people's mental health.
