Who can use Family Day Care?

Family Day Care is available to parents who live, work or study in the City of Monash and who need reliable, quality care for their children. The service can cater for children with special needs and parents needing care while attending appointments or respite care.

How do children benefit from Family Day Care?

Children benefit from Family Day Care through:

  • Opportunities to learn through play and exploration in a small group in a home environment
  • Developing a close relationship with one Educator
  • Socialising with mixed age groups in family settings
  • Participating in activities provided to suit the child's individual needs - such as singing, story telling, make believe, play and creative experiences
  • Community outings which may include visits to the library and parks, shopping and playgroups
  • Learning about tolerance and acceptance of families and children with different cultures, lifestyles and needs

Who cares for the children?

A Family Day Educator is a person who:
  • Has an understanding of the needs of children
  • Has a professional, caring attitude towards people and children
  • Is mature and reliable
  • Has a home that is clean, safe and stimulating for children
  • Maintains a current First Aid Certificate

Who chooses the Educator for your child?

The final choice of Careprovider remains with the parent. Each Educator has something different to offer and scheme staff, where possible, match this with the needs of each parent and child when nominating suitable Educators.

What is a Co-ordination Unit?

Monash Family Day Care has a co-ordination unit, which is staffed by experienced professionals to support the provision of quality care and manage the scheme by:

  • Assisting parents in a range of ways, including the selection of the appropriate Educator for their child, ongoing advice, information and support
  • Recruiting, training and ongoing support of Educators - providing supervision and resources for carers and the children in their care
  • Encouraging communication between the parent, the child and their Educator
  • Keeping up to date with current practice and directions in child care

Can families get help with the cost of care?

When parents register for care they receive a schedule of fees along with information on their eligibility for government fee subsidies. Monash Family Day Care sets its hourly rates and fees annually.

Rates compare favourably with other child care services. Child Care Benefit is available to help with the cost of care.
